That really is what those movements are. What strikes me is that they and other "movements" seek to change the world, or make it into what they think it should be. Mostly, they simply want to do away with the present having no solutions for going ahead. I believe, in the world of Ivan Turgenev and Dostoevsky, it was known as &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;nihilism&lt;/span&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Michelle Obama said something like this when she delivered her speech at the Democratic National Convention in support of her husband. Here is what she said: &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;br face="arial"&gt;&lt;br face="arial"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;font-family:Microsoft Sans Serif;font-size:100%;"  &gt;"She said, 'Barack      stood up that day,' talking about a visit to Chicago neighborhoods,      'and spoke words that have stayed with me ever since. He talked      about &lt;b&gt;'The world as it is&lt;/b&gt;' and '&lt;b&gt;The world as it should      be&lt;/b&gt;…' And, 'All of us driven by a simple belief that &lt;b&gt;the world      as it is just won't do&lt;/b&gt; – that &lt;b&gt;we have an obligation to, fight      for the world as it should be&lt;/b&gt;." Emphasis is mine.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;br style="font-family: arial;"&gt;&lt;br style="font-family: arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Sounds wonderful doesn't it? A new world and Barack issuing in "hope and change". But, what Ms Obama and those involved in movements fail to tell us is, &lt;/span&gt;&lt;i style="font-family: arial;"&gt;"who -- or whose     values -- should determine what "the world... should be?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That is the age old question of whose world it really is and should be. My world would look drastically different from her world. Someone else would have an entirely different view than mine or her's. So, in the end, we have to ask what their definition of the world is and how they want to achieve it. Then, we (the electorate) must decide whose world view we want and vote for them. That is what an election is really about, not the politics, but the world view. Here is a very clear explanation of just how the stimulus packages work in our economy. This is not my work, but was passed along by several, none of whom will lay claim.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;So, here goes.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;div class="moz-text-html" lang="x-unicode"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="moz-text-html" lang="x-unicode"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div align="LEFT"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;b&gt;The truth about the stimulus package -&lt;/b&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div align="LEFT"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;b&gt; I'm paying you the $100.00 I owe you&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div align="LEFT"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;It's  a slow day in the small town of Pumphandle and the streets are  deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody is living  on credit. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div align="LEFT"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;A  tourist visiting the area drives through town, stops at the hotel, and  lays a $100 bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms  upstairs to pick one for the night. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div align="LEFT"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;As soon as he walks upstairs, the hotel owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div align="LEFT"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;(Stay with this..... and pay attention) &lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div align="LEFT"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div align="LEFT"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to his supplier, the Co-op. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div align="LEFT"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;The  guy at the Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local  prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her  "services" on credit. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div align="LEFT"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the hotel Owner. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div align="LEFT"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the traveler will not suspect anything. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div align="LEFT"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;At  that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, states that the rooms  are not satisfactory, picks up the $100 bill and leaves. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div align="LEFT"&gt;&lt;span letterspacing="0" kerning="0"   &gt;&lt;b&gt;No  one produced anything. No one earned anything. Gets me to thinking, of course, about how to approach business for the year. Can't help but think back to the "basics".&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Marketing 101 - remember the first premise of marketing to the web?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;What is it we are touting?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;  A Brand?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;  A Company?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;  A Product?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;  A Corporate Image?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Before we can consider how to achieve our goal, we must know what we want/intend to do. That is called a marketing plan, oddly enough.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Remembering basic Marketing 101 - think in terms of the 4 Ws.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;Who - who are we trying to attract to our site (the customer/visitor) ?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;What - what pages do we want them to see?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Why - why are we bringing them here (sell, educate, promote, etc.) ?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Where - where do they go from here (webform, log-on, action item, share, etc.) ?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;With that in mind, we can then approach the plan to develop a strategy and within that strategy, tactics to achieve our goals. Did I say goals??? What if the networks are down long term? How can/will you conduct business? Even if you have a back up generator, what if you can't get petrol to run it? (A possibility in the event of severe situation.)&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The same applies to those dependent upon the social media for communication. While 28% planned to use internal  resources to launch new initiatives, 25% turn to &lt;a href="http://www.lancermedia.com/" target="_blank"&gt;social  media marketing consultants&lt;/a&gt;.   &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;Twitter is the best place to share news: 47% of the outbound  traffic from Twitter goes to news sites, vs. 28% from Facebook, 18%  from Digg and an imperceptible share from MySpace. Digg is the most  technical; 12% of its outbound traffic goes to technology sites, vs.  10% from Twitter and 7% from Facebook.   &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;Nearly 50% of all Americans are now members of at least one  social network… While social network use is highest among the  young, 66% of people 25-34 years old and 50% of those aged 35-44  years have personal profile pages. 30% of social media users access  a social media site “several times a day,” up from 18% in 2009.   &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;80% of Twitter use is on mobile devices   &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;YouTube now hosts more than 100 million videos and is the  second largest search engine.   &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;78% of consumers trust peer recommendations when making  purchase decisions; just 14% trust advertising. (peer offer  recommendations on social media, blogs and review sites)   &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;More than 1.5 million pieces of content (videos, photos, blog  posts, links etc.) are shared on Facebook daily.   &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;Twitter demographic: 44% are between the ages of 18-34 years.  31% are 35-49 years old. 74% of twitterers have no kids at home. 50%  are college graduates and 17% have post-grad degrees. A slight  majority are female.   &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;A HubSpot study of more than 2,000 companies showed that, for  businesses of all sizes, companies that have blogs have 79% more  Twitter followers than those that don’t. &lt;b&gt;Blogging “increases  Twitter reach by 113% for B2B companies and 30% for B2C companies.”&lt;/b&gt;   &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;While many executives still dismiss Twitter as a waste of  time, recent research suggests it is one of the most valuable social  networks for business.   &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;A recent study concluded that almost 7% of all business web  traffic goes to Facebook, twice as much as Google (3.4%) and well  ahead of Yahoo! at 2.4 percent.   &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;Facebook demographic: Men are more likely to be single while  women using Facebook are more likely to be married, engaged or in a  relationship. The fastest growing segment in Facebook are FEMALES,  aged 55-65 years.   &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;68% of small to midsized business plan larger expenditures  for social media. This was not so much to keep people out as to keep people in. East Germans were fleeing via East Berlin into West Berlin at an alarming rate. To stem this flow the East German government closed the frontier between East and West in 1958. By July 1961, 30,000 East Germans were fleeing each month. Most of these refugees were young skilled workers whom the East could not afford to lose. The survival of East Germany was threatened and the solution to this problem was the Berlin Wall.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;East German (GDR) leader Walter Ulbricht determined to put a stop to it and ordered the wall constructed to prevent the exodus.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;When I arrived a few days afterward, there was a great air of uncertainty in the West as to what to do or what might occur. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;For the part of the US Army there, orders had come from the White House to do nothing of an aggressive nature. We were in a "wait and see" mode. Over the next 2 and a half years we were to experience a lot of anxious moments as the US played "cat and mouse" with the Soviets and GDR.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;During that particular time, our strength consisted of a unit of the 2nd BG 6th Inf. and 3rd BG, 6th Inf., support troops of the headquarters garrison and various rotating infantry units from the Western Zone, primarlily the 18th Inf. and 26 Inf (Blue Spaders) of the 1st Inf Division.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The Russians or rather Soviets, had 7 complete divisions surrounding our small "island" in the East. Essentially, according to our battle plan, in the event of an outbreak of hostilities, we would be able to hold out for 72 to 96 hours while it would take the 7th Army up to 7 - 9 days to fight their way through the 100+ miles from the West to relieve us. Quite obviously, we were "dead" and expendable.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Our job was to give hope and strength to the West Berliners, now isolated from their families and friends. We also were to show resolve in standing up to the GDR/Soviets much as had happened during the Berlin Airlift some 13 years before.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;There was a feeling of finality, of fate decreed as any time the alert alarm sounded, you never knew if it was the real thing or just a readiness drill. You knew that if it were real, it could be the end. And, the people of West Berlin felt it as well. There was an air of frivolity most all the time.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;And, now, 50 years later, I am an old man with children and grandchildren, the Soviet Union no longer exists and the wall is gone leaving a united Germany once again. Only emergency calls are taken and no meetings whatsoever. If you have a secretary or admin assistant, let them be the gatekeeper. Staff are aware. The morning hours are spent determining just what activities, contacts and meetings are required for the week relative to project (I used PERT charts) deadlines.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana;"&gt;With that charted on my day timer, I would then begin calling those with whom I needed to speak and set appointments for conference calls, sending meeting reminders/memos, all the while noting my calendars.
